SÃO MIGUEL
DISCOVER THIS FANTASTIC ISLAND

São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores archipelago, is 62 km long and 15.8 km at its maximum width. With around 137,856 inhabitants (2011 data), São Miguel forms the Eastern Group of the archipelago, together with the island of Santa Maria. Known as Ilha Verde, the landscape is characterized by extensive meadows and patches of forest along the valleys of the streams and in areas of difficult access.

On land, unique landscapes can be appreciated by walking along trails, or even through horseback riding or cycling, among many other activities possible to practice in Nature. The underground world of the island is discovered by visiting the Gruta do Carvão or among the cavities and underwater arches. Diving and whale watching are some of the activities you can enjoy.

There are many Religious Festivities, Festivities and Traditions that are celebrated throughout the year on the island of São Miguel, from the secular Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, which brings hundreds of people every year, to the Festas do Espírito Santo, that mark its tradition in all the islands, extending from May to September. The island of São Miguel is also known for its famous Cozido das Furnas, for the Tea from the Gorreana and Porto Formoso plantations, which appear on the horizon like waves of green leaves, unique in the European context.
